Welcome Address, Dr. Ellen Schmidt-Devlin​​​

Dr. Ellen Schmidt-Devlin, Founder & CEO of ESD Consulting Service, is on the GFAT leadership team. She has over 25 years of experience at Nike in leadership positions in the US and Asia. She directed teams both domestically and abroad.

​

She co-founded and taught in the Master of Science, Sports Product Management programs at the University of Oregon in Portland. Her research in the Global and Local Branding is published in academic journals. She is currently working on a book with Darcy S. Winslow named "The Women Who Shaped Nike," which is scheduled for release in 2026.

Keynote Address, Dr. Nikki Roy

Manik “Nikki” Roy is the Energy Policy Advisor of U.S. Representative Sean Casten (D-IL). Prior to joining Rep. Casten’s staff, Roy worked for Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the ClimateWorks Foundation. Roy has been an environmental policy professional for over forty years, with a focus on climate policy the last twenty-five. Roy has a Ph.D. in public policy from Harvard University, and a B.S. in civil engineering and an M.S. in environmental engineering, both from Stanford University. Roy was raised in Phoenix, Arizona; he and his wife have three daughters and three grandchildren.

 

Roy will discuss the bi-partisan Voluntary Sustainable Apparel Labeling Act which Congressman Casten introduced with Congresswoman Maria Salazar (R-FL). Under the legislation, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will work with apparel manufacturers to develop a voluntary apparel sustainability label to place on products that will contain EPA-verified information relating to the carbon footprint of that product.

Welcome, Overview of Day's Agenda & Goals

Jay Golden is an internationally recognized researcher and academic regarding the dynamics of the global sustainability transition and the transition to a net-zero carbon economy. He is the Pontarelli Professor of Environmental Sustainability and Finance at Syracuse University, where he also founded and directs the Dynamic Sustainability Lab. He also serves on the boards or as a technical advisor for multiple businesses, as well as a consultant for both public and private organizations.
 

In 2017, Golden was appointed to the Board of Scientific Counselors for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where he served on the executive committee until 2024. Prior to Syracuse, Golden led major research centers at Arizona State University and Duke University. He has served as a University Vice Chancellor and University President and CEO as well as leadership positions in the private sector, including a fortune 250 environmental services company. He is the author of the recently published book, Dynamic Sustainability: Implications for Policy, Markets and National Security.

Keynote Address, Dr. George E. Bogden

George E. Bogden serves as the Executive Director of Trade Relations at U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He earned a doctorate in International Relations from the University of Oxford as a Clarendon Scholar, conducting dissertation fieldwork in Kosovo as a Fulbright Public Policy Fellow. Prior to his legal training, Dr. Bogden was Associate Director of a research hub at the Hudson Institute. He later clerked at the U.S. Court of International Trade and held fellowships at Columbia Law School, Bard College, the British Library, the German Marshall Fund, and the Kennan Institute. He practiced law at King & Spalding in Washington, DC. His research has been featured in The Washington Post, and his commentary has appeared in The Atlantic, Newsweek, War on the Rocks, The Wall Street Journal, Lawfare, The Hill, The National Interest, and The Kyiv Independent, among other outlets. â€‹

Bogden will be sharing his perspectives and insights into the coming four years and how traceability will continue to evolve in the U.S. and globally, especially its impacts in the footwear and apparel industries.

From the sidewalk: go through the public entrance located to the left of the SU entrance (SU entrance locked at all times, only accessible to SU affiliated people)  

  • You enter the lobby for Feb 25

  • Take the elevator to the 12th floor, labeled RT (rooftop)  

  • For Feb 26 take the elevator to the 9th floor  

 

From the parking garage: (under the building, accessed by this address: 1330 19th Street NW Washington, DC 20036) 

  • Take elevator to 1st floor to get to the lobby, then take a different elevator up to the specific floor  

  • Parking garage fee is $15-$20/day
